Radio controlled or remote controlled (RC) devices can be hobby grade or toy grade. Toy grade RC devices are usually available at retail toy stores and may be purchased by people for their children to play with. These are mostly toys produced in bulk quantities and comprise of non- serviceable parts. The RC toys cannot be used outside as they are not rugged enough to take the strain of the terrain outdoors. Most of the radio controlled toy grade devices are not durable as they are made from soft materials that are easily breakable. These items are ready to use and thus require no assembling of parts. Since they run on battery cells, all you need to do is place the batteries in the case and your toy is ready to play.

Hobby grade radio controlled devices are meant for the serious enthusiast. These devices are simple in their design and can be remodeled, serviced and reused. The material is durable and the items are usually custom made. More often these devices need to be assembled, but the stores may deliver the assembled piece, if you so wish. A serious hobbyist will always prefer to buy the kit and do the assembling himself. This is in itself a creative art that the hobbyists indulge in, apart from participating in various competitions. There are sporting events held for the RC enthusiasts that have their own rules for the game.

The various types of radio controlled toys available presently are described below:

1. Airplanes:

The RC airplane is available in various shapes and sizes, from gas turbine driven models to the smaller flyers. They can be tied to a pole with the help of a rope or they can be free flying. They can be fuel driven or electrically propelled and the latest models can even reach speeds of 250mph. Since the RC airplanes are complex toys they require some amount of control and knowledge of flying. Therefore, adult supervision is required during flying and they are not suitable for very young children. The airborne RC models are among the most expensive and a crash may result in damages that may prove to be very costly.

2. RC Cars:

Cars are the most common and the most popular among the RC toys. The cars are either fuel driven or electrically powered. These can be operated even by children and are much safer compared to airborne devices. The RC cars may be used in on-road or off-road RC car races. The RC car models come in various sizes and shapes.

3. RC Helicopters:

This is another airborne device. However, its design and flying pattern is different from that of an airplane. Some enthusiasts prefer it to the airplane as they claim it to be much more interesting for flying. The same factors of airplanes apply to helicopters too.

4. RC Boat:

The first radio controlled toy to be created was a boat as demonstrated by Tesla. He showed the public, a boat that obeyed people's command. In reality, he was remotely controlling the boat.

5. Robotics:

Robotics is popular in Japan, but the western world is also fast catching up. There are competitions held for the best robot created in terms of design and creativity. Robotics is moving to the latest technology of artificial intelligence and voice control models. Radio control models are being used as toys and for remote handling of bombs and other activities involving danger.

Bruce Bird asked:

When the RC frequency spectrum was first introduced to provide controlled facilities for radio control (RC) modelers, it was limited to a set of just six. These frequencies were not labeled with channel numbers as they are today, but were represented by multi-colored flags; purple/white for 72.320 MHz (megahertz), red/white for 72.240 MHz, etc. Having only 6 frequencies to choose from was quite restrictive and meant a lot of RC airplane pilots had to be grounded, waiting to take their turn on a given frequency.

The RC model airplane frequency spectrum today is much broader, consisting of a much larger batch of 50 channels in the 72 MHz band in the USA, a similar batch in the 35Mhz band in the UK and other bands according to country. In addition, there remain a few 27 MHz channels shared across many uses including for 'park flyer' model airplanes, and a handful of other more specialized channels reserved for licensed amateur radio operators. For convenience, I'm just going to refer to the 72Mhz band as the band allocated for model airplane use in the USA. You will need to read that as the band allocated for model airplane use in your own country.

So now you've decided to buy your RC model and radio equipment you also need to decide which radio frequency you are going to operate on. Unlike most other features of the sport, choosing a popular channel which is used by lots of other people is not a good idea. Choosing a standard 72 MHz frequency for your radio can be as simple as going to the local hobby store and

purchasing one with a standard radio setup. But randomly choosing a channel can result in a problem if you don't do a little investigation first.

Firstly, decide whether you are going to be a park flyer using 27 MHz or going for a more advanced setup on 72 MHz. The 27 MHz channels are primarily dedicated to what are considered "park flyers". These pre-packaged systems usually come with everything you need to get up and flying and are intended for the casual flyer that just wants to get out, get in the air, and not mess with the higher cost of a more complex airplane and radio setup. Choosing a RC model airplane park flyer package with a pre-set frequency needs little to no investigation since you have little choice as the packages give you a choice of only 3 or 4 channels, some FM, some AM. Channel conflicts in a RC park flying situation are less common due to the large number of parks and flying areas available to the casual pilot. But if you do invest in a park flyer then be aware that there may well be other pilots out there in the park using the same frequency as you - and that can mean expensive trouble when you lose control of your airplane, or even worse if some stranger accuses you of causing his airplane to crash.

Second, if you are going for 72 MHz then visit your flying field and find out what other people are using. Imagine arriving to your favorite RC model airplane flying field only to find someone else already using the channel you have just paid out good money for. Some clubs have rules pertaining to what happens in this situation. As only one pilot can operate at a time on a given frequency this usually means pilots having to switch off and take turns using the frequency - and some means of the club controlling the changeover process either by physically taking control of the transmitter or just having a procedure written into the club rules. If you are flying at a busy site that is not a sanctioned flying club with rules and bylaws, you might find yourself sitting out and unable to fly for the day.

The smartest way to choose an RC frequency for your radio is to do some legwork first. Visit the field where you will do most of your flying. Investigate what channels are already in use and which channels are seldom used. Finding one that is infrequently used or not used at all will allow you to buy, secure in the nowledge that you will be able to fly with minimum interruption.

Third, make sure you can change the frequency after you have bought the equipment. If you take care to check before you buy whether the system will allow you to do a manual crystal replacement then if you run into a problem you can change later to a channel which is less busy. Some crystal changes you can do yourself while others have to go back to the factory to have the work done. Regardless of your current situation, if you already have an RC radio setup, or just thinking about getting one, doing a little footwork up front can go a long way.

Dhaval Suthar asked:

Ships and boats, yachts and submarines have long been the subject of fantasies nursed by the young and the old. The waters of the seas and oceans hold many secrets which to the mind of the hobbyist were shared by the sea vessels that sailed on them. One yearns to be part of the mystery and adventure that surrounds sailing. A very select few can afford to own sea faring yachts and boats. The rest of us live our dreams by owning ship or boat models that are fashioned after the real ships and boats.

Made to scale boats can be made to sail with the help of radio control equipment with which they are fitted. Such radio controlled boats can be operated remotely with the help of a multi channel radio transmitter. The radio transmitter is in the hands of the operator while there is a corresponding receiver on the boat. Signals are sent to the radio receiver on the boat by changing the position of the two joy sticks on the transmitter. The receiver on the boat is connected to two battery operated electric motors. Signals received from the radio transmitter which is handled by the operator are translated into instructions to run the motors as per directions.

With a host of websites and companies now offering ship and boat models, they are able to offer exciting deals backed by comparative rate studies.

Models can be handcrafted and made of wood or acrylic or a little of both. But fact remains that astute care is taken to deliver a finished and aesthetically produced boat model since it can be expected that one who would want to own a boat model for the love of owning a near original piece would settle for nothing less than a near perfect look alike. Radio controlled boats however have to be treated with more care since one cannot have water entering the motors on the boat.

Although boats were considered a necessity for transportation until several years ago, today they are more a form of recreation and an indulgence towards a hobby. Granted that actually sailing on a boat is an experience an adventurous person would love above anything else, the technically oriented opt for the radio controlled variety of boat models to add to their collection of antique water-worthy artifacts.

There are various models that you can look into buying. And many places where you will find these radio controlled planes. The traditional locations for remote airplanes are hobby shops and some toy shops. In both of these places you will find many types of planes that you can look through.

For those hobbyists that feel that the building phase of flying their planes is important there are kits that can be purchased. These kits will reduce the time that is needed to locate and start the construction of your radio controlled airplane. Of course besides finding kits, parts that need to be assembled you will find there are few other types of model airplanes that can be bought.

These types of radio controlled airplanes are known as Almost Ready to Fly designs and Ready to Fly designs. With these airplanes the time that is spent on assembling the airplanes is cut down. For instance you have 10 to 20 hours spent on building a from scratch radio controlled airplane.

The Almost Ready to Fly airplanes can be built in 4 or so hours. As you see there is a marked reduction in time that is spent on building these model airplanes.

When you shop for one of these radio controlled model airplanes the best place where you can find these planes is in hobby shops and toys shops. The price of these planes will vary and sometimes the type of airplane that you choose to buy will influence the price. This is not to say that you are creating the price hike but rather that you have chosen a popular model or one that is priced at high prices naturally.

The various radio controlled model airplanes will allow you to see the different types of power that are used for these airplanes. You have gas mixture model airplanes, jet airplanes, and others.

As you choose the radio controlled airplanes which catch your eye make sure that you are getting one that you will be able top control. This is a great way to experience the thrill of flying. With a radio controlled airplane you are the pilot.

The many different radio controlled airplanes are ones that you will enjoy looking through. from the whimsical to the futuristic there are many that you will have the opportunity of flying. The only barriers to this ease of flying are that of money and your patience.

Caroline Miller asked:

People who find themselves gaining an interest in nitro radio controlled cars, can look forward to a whole world of fun and possibilities.

Whether young or old, this is a hobby that can be enjoyed and shared with other RC car enthusiasts. Building and driving nitro radio controlled cars is quickly growing in popularity. There are full fledged nitro RC car communities all over the world that organize events, get-togethers, and races. These are great opportunities for all those that share their passion for nitro to exchange information, compete, and have an all around good time.

For those just starting out with nitro, there are a few things to consider before purchasing a car.

Nitro RC cars are one of the two main types of RC cars, the other being electric RC cars. They are named for the special fuel that they use, which is a blend of nitromethane, methyl alcohol, and oil.

Nitro RC cars can be purchased in kits or pre-assembled. Those looking to get into the action right away can buy a ready to run or RTR model. These require little to no assembly and can be run straight out of the box.

However, those with a mechanical flair might opt to go with a kit. Kits include precise, step-by-step instructions, so even those with little mechanical experience are encouraged to try it out. Putting together an RC car can give valuable insight into the different parts that make up the car. This knowledge will come in handy later, when doing necessary maintenance and making repairs.

That are many advantages nitro RC cars have over their electric counter parts. The most notable being their speed.

Nitro RC cars are often faster than electrics, averaging speeds of 40 to 70 MPH out of the box, and can be upgraded to go even faster.

Nitro RC cars are generally built sturdier than electrics and can take more damage from high speed collisions.

They are also more realistic, emitting louder noises, emulating the roar of a real car.

The downside is that nitro RC cars can be harder to clean and maintain. They contain miniature internal combustion engines which can be just as messy and fickle as real engines. They require constant care and careful tuning, as well as more cleaning than electronic models.

Nitro RC cars are generally more expensive than electronics. A beginner level car will cost around $150, while some racing cars can cost thousands. A person can invest as much as they want.

Whether building, racing or just playing around; nitro radio controlled cars are a great hobby and source of satisfaction.

Abhishek Agarwal asked:

If electronic gadgets can get you crazy and all interested, you should be the right one to become involved in radio-controlled hobbies. Assembling and designing different vehicles can be made possible with radio controlled hobbies. Amateur radio hobby, on the other hand, can be taken by people who are more interested in making contact with other persons via wireless transmissions.

These hobbies are very similar in nature and a lot of people can actually have an interest in both radio-controlled models as well as amateur radio hobby. Anything to do with radio waves can speed up their interest. Internet, no doubt, is the ultimate source for any beginner.

Most of the sites in the internet could be dealing with selling of toys or some hobby level models. So a research has to be undergone to spot where each thing is. As you might notice while browsing the internet that many forums and communities relating to remote controlled gadgets exists and people are there to give you any sort of assistance. There ought to be a person somewhere who can guide you to the best possible place to look for it. Searching online for groups and information has loads of benefits as distance is not a criterion. Internet can actually help you out to speak to anyone, anywhere even with someone who would be half way round the globe.

Craft and hobby stores are also ideal resources. Stores dealing only with remote controlled systems can be of further help as information on supplies and demand is got and you can get to know the person running it more personally. These kinds of stores usually have educated people and they would be ready to offer you any sort of advice and help. Getting to know these knowledgeable sales people would be of ultimate help.

One should also consider the money he is spending on remote controlled hobbies. Usually, a remote controlled vehicle might cost around hundred dollars. It is advised that hobbies should start with ready-made kit car and then move on to advanced vehicles when you have decided to give heart and soul to that hobby. Once your mind is fixed to a particular hobby that you might be interested in, then it’s a matter of time that you can improve on it pragmatically.

Spending more time in this could do wonders as you might get to know more about the hobby you are involved in as well as the information on the supplies.

If you are thinking of buying your first remote control truck, here are some things you need to keep in mind. I would advise you pick yourself up an RTR (ready to run) kit to begin with. These RTR RC trucks often come fully assembled, or require only minimal assembly like gluing the tires to the wheels. Most of these models now also include a 2 channel radio and the servos pre-installed, saving you the hassle of trying to match a radio to servos.

Ready to run kits may be slightly more expensive than their basic unassembled kit counterparts, but if you do not have the building experience, it will save you weeks of work in assembly time, frustration and errors.

Imagine being able to bring home, or have delivered to your door, your brand spanking new RC nitro truck, removing it from it’s packaging, inserting some batteries and filling with nitro fuel…..and being able to hit the dirt track straight off! This is the beauty of RTR RC truck kits.

Some more experienced racers, or even some very adventurous newcomers, may want to build their RC monster truck from scratch, so that they get to know all the components and how they are assembled. But even with a RTR model, you will gain this knowledge anyhow by maintaining, modifying and tweaking your truck once you start to use it. If you do plan to build your own truck then allow yourself 3-5 days to put it together.

You can expect to pay $50 - $100 more for a ready to run RC nitro truck and you will probably be looking at paying $300 - $500 for a good level reliable RC truck.

To fully get going right off the rails, you will need some extras which you should remember to add to your order, or you won’t get your truck out on that first day! You will obviously need some nitro fuel and a fuel bottle is a better option for refuelling to avoid any fuel spillage. As well as this you will need a glow plug heater and you may need an electric starter pack if your truck does not have a pull cord start. It is also recommended to have some oil for routine lubrication maintenance after its first run. All in all these extras should not cost you any more than $50 - $100.

Most major manufacturers now produce fully ready to run monster trucks including Traxxas, CEN, Tamiya and Team Associated.

Yes, this can be an expensive hobby, but weigh this up against the adrenalin pumping action of these RC monster trucks and there is no contest! After all – it’s only money!

Remote planes are one of the fastest-growing hobbies around, not to mention one of the most fun. You can buy a kit (or even cut wood yourself), build a plane, and then use your remote control to fly your creation around in the park. In recent years their popularity has even begun to catch up to remote-controlled cars: cars might be fun, sure, but do they fly? No!

So how do remote-controlled planes work? Basically, the controller you hold sends radio waves through the air to the plane, telling it what to do. The receivers on the plane then carry out your actions to move the wings and other parts, just like the controls on a real plane send signals to mechanically move the parts – after all, it would be almost impossible for a pilot to move a plane without mechanical assistance.

Remote-controlled planes have gained popularity in recent years as their technology has advanced in leaps and bounds. A decade ago, for example, people were still using fuels like petrol to make their planes go, but today technology has moved to the point where model planes can fly using only electricity.

If you want to fly a remote plane yourself, the best way to do it is to buy a kit – they don’t cost that much. Generally, you will get a collection of parts made out of balsa wood (used because it is so light), together with instructions for building the plane. However, the kit will not include all the tools you need, which can include saws (if the wood hasn’t already been cut) and various kinds of glue.

Unfortunately, building planes this way can be very difficult and time-consuming, even when you buy a kit that is supposed to be easy to build. Because what you’re making is basically a scale model of a plane that has to work in the exact same way, it doesn’t take much for it not to fly at all. Errors that wouldn’t matter when building most other DIY projects can cause your plane to crash on its first flight, destroying hours of work.

While you could just go out and buy a ‘ready to fly’ plane, many people believe that takes a lot of the fun out of remote-controlled planes as a hobby. If you’re careful when you build your plane and follow the instructions to the letter, it should work just fine. Good luck!

However you do it, enjoy your shed!

Radio-controlled cars are a classic toy, the source of many happy childhood memories for millions of people. Yet radio-controlled cars aren’t just a nostalgic item: they’re also a great toy for the children (and adults) of today.

If you haven’t played with radio-controlled cars since you were a child, you might be surprised by just how far they’ve come. The once-huge battery packs have become slimmer thanks to advances in battery technology, and the cars themselves have got a lot faster.

One of the most fun things about the cars is that you can race them with your friends. All you need is a big road or path, or even a park for off-road cars, and you can see whose is the best. You can even set up an obstacle course to add an element of skill to the racing – all you need is a few garden toys, and you’re set. If you get good, you can even enter the tournaments that are held by hobbyists all over the world.

How good your car can be is only limited by how much you want to spend, from toy cars that cost next to nothing all the way up to cars that are basically just a smaller version of the real thing. There are cars now that look just like larger cars, have mini versions of the same parts inside and run on fuel rather than electricity. Some even have stereos inside! The fastest radio-controlled car in the world can reach speeds of 111mph, which is not to be sniffed at.

If you get really into RC cars, you can start building them yourself from kits, which is difficult but satisfying when it all works right. Making and repairing some of the higher-end models can be a great way for children to learn the basics of mechanical engineering – who knows, maybe it’ll help them with their career. If you thought RC cars were just a toy, think again.

The radio controlled Esky helicopters run the gamut from the small electric remote controlled helicopters to the larger gas-operated radio controlled helicopters. Also known as E-Sky Helicopters, they produce remote controlled helicopters for everyone from the novice to the expert.
The designs of the E-Sky RC Helicopters often include fully adjustable flybar weights that allow you to adjust the controls for a choice between ease of handling and performance. Keeping the flybar weights in the outer position will actually reduce the performance somewhat in order to make these radio controlled helicopters much easier for the beginner to control. Moving them closer in will increase the performance of the Radio Controlled flight but will make handling much more difficult. It is highly recommended to get used to controlling your RC helicopter before you begin attempting to perform aerobatic stunts or advanced RC flying.

The coaxial rotors are another revolutionary E-Sky Helicopter design feature that makes these RC Helicopters an excellent choice for the novice helicopter pilot. The contra rotating rotors decrease the shear and the torque often associated with Helicopter flight. While the coaxial rotors are not ideally suited for advanced helicopter acrobatics, they do make the Esky coaxial helicopters ideal for beginners and an excellent starting point for anyone who is interested in getting involved with remote controlled flight.
E-Sky helicopters makes RC Aircraft in all sorts of price ranges as well. From the very cheap to the very expensive, you can find it here. However, if you are concerned about wrecking before you ever get started with RC flying; Esky has a full selection of simulators available as well. While the main difficulty in RC Helicopter for most people is, the torque involved during take-off, these Radio Controlled simulators allow you to complete your flight before you ever leave your home.
In all honesty, most people seem to have more difficulties with the Li Po batteries than they do with the Esky Radio Controlled helicopters. The Li Po or Lithium Polymer battery is the latest and greatest in battery technology and allows the Esky RC helicopters to be flown longer. While the batteries are smaller and more powerful, care must be taken in charging and handling or these stand a better chance of destroying your RC Flight fun faster than any accident or mishap with your Esky RC Helicopters.
Whether you are new to the world of Radio Controlled Helicopters or an advanced acrobatic pilot with years of experience, you will probably find something that not only fits your needs, but provides you with endless hours of RC Entertainment as well. With a little adjustment, most of their helicopters can be easily adapted so that you can share the RC Flight experience with everyone in the family together. Esky Radio Controlled Helicopters are a must if you want something that is equally suitable for everyone.
